A Slice of Mexico in the Heart of London
An exhibition on Montezuma and the Aztecs Opens Today – 24th September
The history of Mexico and the Aztecs is a fascinating one – involving stories of gold, sacrificial slaughter and great empires. The last leader of the Aztecs (or Mexicas) has become one of the most famous: Montezuma.
A powerful man, on a par with the gods, he somehow surrendered without a fight to the small band of Spanish conquistadores.
Until 24th January 2010, the British Museum will be hosting an exhibition on this remarkable man and his remarkable story.
I haven’t had the chance to check it out yet, but would love to, to see if it links in with my experiences of travelling around Mexico.
Expect to see skulls, black mirrors and stone eagles…and to puzzle over how this strange path of history came to pass.

Sounds great – must get up to London and check it out.
I saw this exhibition the other day (a sneaky peak before it opened). Definitely makes me want to visit Mexico – fascinating stuff. I wish I’d had longer to look around the exhibition, but as I had no background knowledge of the subject I spent most of my time reading the panels rather than looking at the objects.
BBC Wales has made a doc about the exhibition, so if you’re quick you can catch it on iPlayer, but no doubt it will be repeated (well, it was scheduled against X Factor and Strictly come dancing, so probably only 2 people watched it live anyway…). http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00mzrnp)
