Today’s sponsored article on Christmas Markets in Germany comes from Travelex Currency Services.*

A Guide to Christmas Markets in Germany

No-one does a Christmas market quite like Germany – and best of all it’s an easy country to travel to. Yet with the strength of the Euro fluctuating against the Pound it’s also advisable to seek the best foreign currency exchange before you go.

Here is just a taste of what you can expect from the German Christmas markets:

Berlin

Berlin is home to more than 50 individual markets, with one of the most famous being the Alexanderplatz market. Here you’ll feel especially festive with the Fairy Forest and an ice-skating rink. If you’re looking for some great traditional crafts and antique toys, consider heading to the Unter den Linden Christmas market, or if a market with a more party atmosphere and some serious shopping is what you require head to the Gedächtniskirche market right in the heart of the shopping, drinking and clubbing district of the city centre.

Munich

The traditional market on Marienplatz in Munich is one of the oldest in Germany, going back to the 14th Century. It is set up on the city’s largest urban square and offers all kinds of handcrafted items and stunning treats, like gingerbread and roast apples. Another popular Christmas market to head to in Munich is Kripperlmarkt; here you’ll find traditional crafted nativity ornaments. If you really want the best in Christmas decorations this in an absolute must.

Cologne

The charming city of Cologne has a total of seven Christmas markets, with the main four located at Alter Markt, Cologne Cathedral, Neumarkt and Rudolfplatz. Cologne Cathedral is a stunning sight and provides the most unique backdrop to any of the Christmas markets in Cologne. Away from the big four there is also a medieval Christmas market held at the Chocolate Museum and an ice rink at Heumarkt.

Nuremburg

Nürnberg Christkindlesmarkt is one of Germany’s oldest and most famous Christmas markets and attracts over 2 million people every year. A chosen ‘Christ Child’ opens the market each year with a huge ceremony which is well worth dropping in for, as is the procession of children walking with lanterns through the town up to the castle. This market has everything you’d want from a Christmas market, such as gingerbread, traditional crafts, gluhwein and bratwurst.

This is just a snapshot of what Germany has to offer in terms of Christmas markets. There are widespread markets throughout the country including Münster, Stuttgart, Ludwigsburg, Lübeck, Düsseldorf, Baden-Baden and Aachen to name just a few.

Today’s guest post on how to spend a weekend in Madrid comes from the Holiday Extras team…

A Weekend in Madrid

Spain’s capital is hard to resist. It’s a city that packs a serious cultural punch, but doesn’t lack in nightlife either. With its architectural charm and friendly local population, it makes a great place for a cheap weekend break.

Situated in the heart of Spain, Madrid is full of cultural and historic sights. The Royal Palace is a beautiful site to visit, remains the largest royal palace in Western Europe and is considered to be Madrid’s most striking building. The Plaza de Oriente lies in front of the Palace, which means that visitors can enjoy the majestic surroundings of the palace in all its glory while relaxing in the sun or having a bite to eat.

Then there’s the Templo de Debod, an authentic 2nd Century BC Egyptian temple in the heart of the city. There is also the Madrid Cathedral, whose construction began in 1883 and continued right up until 1993.

In the east of the city stands Puerta de Alcalá, a structure with an impressive story to tell. This iconic building, adorned by many historic statues, is actually the old city gate which stands at the entrance to the Parque del Buen Retiro.

Art-lovers should head to Prado, one of Europe’s most outstanding art museums and the Reina Sofia, which houses Picasso’s Woman in Blue among others.

Food in Madrid

If all that sightseeing leaves you hungry then try Botin, the oldest restaurant in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records. Serving Spanish food in a traditional environment, this eatery has proven popular with tourists but still retains its authentic Spanish appeal. If you’re looking for something a little bit different, try La Corral de Moreia, one of Madrid’s finest flamenco restaurants.

Whatever you decide to do in Madrid, there are other things you can do to make your journey stress and hassle free. Make sure to book your Heathrow airport parking in advance of your departure date – the earlier you book it the cheaper it will be and if you’re looking for an extra little bit of luxury before you fly, why not book a Heathrow airport hotel so that you don’t need to worry about rushing for your flight in the morning.

There’s much more to Belgium than world class chocolate and a cold Duvel, and a weekend trip is the best way to experience the country’s charms, history and culture. But with only a few days up your sleeve, it’s best to stick to one destination. The two hubs of Belgian tourism are Bruges and Brussels – but which city to visit?

As an initial guide, Brussels is the place to go if you’re attracted by city lights. If you’re more suited to medieval charm, then you’ll be lured in by Bruges’ gothic inspirations and old-world feel.

If you’re trying to decide where to base yourself for your weekend getaway, then here’s a guide to a few of the main attractions of both cities.

Brussels

Once a 10th century fortress town, Brussels is now a bustling metropolis that is home to the EU headquarters and is a hub of international politics. The city has managed to maintain its historic charm while offering all the mod cons of an international city. In Brussels, these are some of the attractions that await you.

Grand Place Brussels

- The Grand Place – The Grand Place is Brussels’ main square. Not only is it a UNESCO heritage site, but it’s also been voted the most beautiful square in Europe. The baroque frames of the guildhalls border the square and add to its splendour. If you’re there in August you might catch the flower carpet, when the square’s floor is covered with begonias.

- Manneken Pis – One of the cutest and quirkiest attractions of the city, Manneken Pis is a small bronze statue of a young boy who is urinating into the fountain’s basin. The Friends of Manneken-Pis, a non-profit organisation, dress the statue in different costumes a couple of times a week.

- Atomium – The Atomium is an impressive monument in Brussels that was originally built for the World Fair of 1958. The monument is made up of 9 connected steel spheres in the shape of a cell of iron crystal. Inside the connectors of the spheres are escalators. The public can move between the spheres. The top sphere offers panoramic views of Brussels.

- Museums – There are a number of museums well worth a visit in Brussels. The Centre for Fine Arts houses the works of highly regarded Flemish painters. The Belgian Comic Strip Centre is a fun museum that showcases the Belgian love of comics (it is home to Tintin after all!) If your trip to Belgium is all about the chocolate, then head to the Museum of Chocolate and Cocoa – just a stone’s throw from the Grand Place.

- Breweries – Belgians love their beer and there are a number of breweries in Brussels well worth a visit. The Cantillon Brewery gets great reviews.

Bruges

The Hollywood blockbuster In Bruges was a great advertisement for the city, but to experience the historic charm and quaint architecture for yourself, you’ll have to hit the streets. Strolling through the city on foot is the best way to discover its nooks and crannies. You’ll probably come across these main attractions.

- The Canals – Bruges is often nicknamed ‘Venice of the North’. The canals are the focus of the city and give it a picturesque, chocolate box quality. Take a canal tour by boat and make sure you see them by night.

Take a Tour on the Bruges Canals

- Markt Square – This is the heart of Bruges’ Old Town and the main square. It’s surrounded by bustling shops and restaurants and holds markets, an icerink and impromptu concerts. The Belfry sits at the southern end of the square and can be climbed for spectacular views of the city.

- The Burg – Another town square, the Burg is surrounded by historic buildings and has a distinct medieval feel. The intricate detailing of the buildings and the gothic architecture is best seen when illuminated at night.

- Church of our Lady – This 13th century church has a 122 metre high bell tower. The art, architecture and style of the church can be admired inside and out.

- Museums – History buffs will enjoy a visit to the Groeningemuseum and the Memling, featuring many of the finest Flemish artists’ work.

So which will you choose? Hop on cheap flights to Belgium to enjoy all that Bruges or Brussels has to offer.

Have you been to Belgium? Would you recommend Bruges or Brussels for a weekend getaway destination?

Venice, as I’m sure you know, has a rich and classical list of things to see and do. Those include the understated majesty of St Mark’s Square, the flamboyance of the Doge’s Palace and the romantic thrill of singing “Just One Cornetto” as you glide along the canals on a gondola.

Yet sometimes, sometimes, Venice feels overcrowded and a little overrated. All that means is that you’re in the wrong part (or in an inexplicably foul mood.)

Unlock Venice’s Secrets

Finding the secret parts of Venice is incredibly easy. At some point along your well-signposted, thronging route towards St Mark’s Square, just turn left. Or right.

Wander over the bridges and through the tiny back streets to see the real side of Venice. The beautiful side of Venice. Walk past gardens and parks, families having dinner, locals indulging in a kayak race…Retrace history in Il Ghetto, the part of Venice that lent its name to ghettos everywhere else.

Sketching in Venice

It’s a small area, really. And it’s safe to wander around. So, wander and walk. Take your time and just enjoy being away from the crowds.

That’s the secret to falling in love with Venice

Cologne, perhaps Germany’s most colourful city, makes a great place for a fun cheap weekend break. From chocolate museums to charismatic breweries, cathedrals to the home of Eau de Cologne itself, the city of Cologne will keep you entertained.

Top Things to See and Do in Cologne

Cologne's Cathedral

Cologne’s Cathedral

Cologne’s cathedral was one of the few buildings spared during the WWII bombing raids. Between 1880 and 1884, the Dom was the tallest building in the world (something to bear in mind as you slog your way up the belltower’s staircase.) This isn’t your usual cathedral, though. Look inside for stained glass windows that feature outer space and modern art.

The Chocolate Museum

Although the Schokoladenmuseum has plenty of educational exhibits, the real draw is the chocolate fountain. Brilliantly placed in front of a sweeping glass window that overlooks the river and the skyline of Cologne, the fountain allows you to embrace your inner child and scoff a load of chocolate.

Kölsch

Cologne - A City of Breweries

Possibly the symbol of Cologne, this light and refreshing beer is served in test-tube shaped glasses across the city. Visit one of the authentic breweries, such as Cölner Hofbräu P. Josef Früh on Am Hof street, where waiters are called köbes and your bill is calculated by the number of notches on your beer mat.

The Hohenzollernbrücke Bridge

Cologne Padlocks

Once a fairly ugly railway bridge, the exuberant declarations of love have transformed the functional into the fantastic. Stroll along to see glitter, padlocks and handcuffs as people search for new ways to say “I love you.”

Eau de Cologne

Yep, the name does actually come from this city. The famous perfumed water called No 4711 still flows in the shop that has traded it for over 200 years. You can visit the Glockengasse shop for free.

The Old Town – Altstadt

Cologne's Old Town

These narrow colourful houses give some impression of what the city must have been like before all those bombers came along. Filled with restaurants and, yes more breweries, it’s a great riverside area to stroll around.

The Rathaus

Every city has an elegant administrative building and Cologne’s Rathaus is no exception…well, except for the stone statues with their trousers around their ankles.

KölnTriangePanorama for a View of Cologne

The KölnTrianglePanorma

OK, so the tower itself is nothing to write home about but the view from the top takes in the whole of Cologne. Visit as the sun sets for the best experience…

Getting to Cologne

Several budget airlines fly to Cologne, or you can travel by Eurostar, changing at Brussels (I travelled as part of the Eurostar Explorer expedition.)

Getting Around Cologne

Most of the attractions in Cologne are within walking distance of the train station (next to the cathedral), although if your legs get tired there is an underground system as well as a network of taxis.

Things to Do in Cologne

Stepping into the Casino in Monte Carlo brings about a rush of James Bond fever. After passing rows of luxury cars and stepping beneath the elegant doorway, I entered this world of hushed tones, plush fabrics and polished mahogany braced for vodka martinis and a thrilling car chase.

Of course, I didn’t exactly have the kind of cash that granted me access to those private areas, but for 10 euros and an “appropriate” dress code, I was allowed into the Salon Europe and the Salon des Amériques. There, suitably distinguished others tried their luck at roulette, poker and Black Jack.

Even if you don’t plan on risking a single penny on the games, it’s worth visiting the Monte Carlo Casino to enjoy the architecture, the location and the legend.

Perched on the hilltop of Monaco, one of the world’s richest principalities, the Casino has spectacular views across the harbour of Monte Carlo. Since yachts are as common as cars in UK suburbia (and people aren’t troubled by their latest tax bill), this compact harbour dazzles with the reflections of streetlights on gleaming yachts.

The Casino itself also has no understanding of the word “moderation.” From the fountains and gardens outside, to the Belle Epoque façade and grand inner Atrium complete with marble columns, it’s easy to understand why this place sparked Fleming’s imagination when he wrote Casino Royale.

Find up to date information about the Monte Carlo Casino here.

Last year, I visited the Arts & Sciences centre in Valencia during the day, taking in the museums and the aquarium. What I missed, though, was the sight of this stunning complex at night.
Today's guide to a cheap weekend in Naples comes from Laura Thayer, an art historian and writer living in Italy.

Today’s guide to a cheap weekend in Naples comes from Laura Thayer, an art historian and writer living in Italy.

“If you still believe that old saying that ‘there’s nothing south of Rome,’” she says, “then you’ve got one big surprise in store for you when you arrive in Naples, Italy.”

Let’s hear her recommendation for a cheap weekend break in Naples.

A Cheap Weekend Break in Naples

Bay of Naples

Take a wild ride through the city’s varied past by exploring Greek and Roman ruins, visiting the French Angevin castles and the grand palaces built under the Spanish Viceroyalty and Bourbon rulers. You’ll find a little bit of everything in this vibrant city that stretches out along the Bay of Naples, making it an invigorating and exciting weekend break destination.

Walking in Naples

When you arrive, head to the Piazza Trieste e Trento where you’ll find the beautiful, glass-domed Galleria Umberto I shopping centre, the famous Teatro San Carlo opera house and Piazza Plebiscito, Naples’ grandest piazza.

Nearby is the formidable Castel Nuovo with its impressive marble entrance dating from 1443. Visit Caffè Gambrinus, an exquisite reminder of belle époque Naples, for a traditional strong Neapolitan espresso.

Food & Atmosphere in Naples

Castel Nuovo

Walk along the Spaccanapoli, the ancient Greek street that means “split Naples.” This is where you’ll discover the true character of Naples, with laundry lines criss-crossing the palazzos, scooters whizzing by and the tempting scent of pastries wafting past. Try the famous local Sfogliatella – a pastry filled with orange and cinnamon-infused ricotta cheese.

After a break, head to the Duomo, or Cathedral of Naples, to experience the rich artistic and religious history of Naples.

Museums in Naples

Don’t just think of Rome and Florence when it comes to Italian museums. Naples has both the National Archaeological Museum, which houses one of the world’s most impressive collections of ancient art, and the Capodimonte Musuem, where you’ll find one of Italy’s finest collections of 14th – 19th century art.

Getting To & Around Naples

Duomo of Naples

Thanks to easyJet, getting to Naples from many European cities doesn’t have to break the bank. You can fly direct to the Naples Capodochino International Airport from London, Berlin, Liverpool and Geneva, as well as Milan and Venice from within Italy. Flights from other destinations are often cheaper into Rome, but it’s only a two to three hour train ride south to Naples.

Most of the top attractions in Naples are in the Centro Storico and the good news for budget travellers is that the best way to navigate the historical centre of Naples is on foot. However, the city is criss-crossed with bus, metro and funicular railways and public transport is highly recommended over attempting to drive in the chaotic traffic of Naples!

You don’t have to bust your budget renting a car or taxi to visit the important archaeological sights of Pompeii and Herculaneum either. The Circumvesuviana train line connects Naples with nearby Pompeii, Herculaneaum and the beautiful resort town of Sorrento.

Laura Thayer is an art historian and freelance writer living on the Amalfi Coast in Campania, Italy. She writes about travel for MNUI travel insurance and blogs about life on the Amalfi Coast at her own site Ciao Amalfi.

Some people are lucky enough to visit the Eternal City of Rome twice, either from a successful coin toss into the Trevi Fountain or from some other stroke of good fortune. On a second city break, visit

Rome’s lesser-known attractions:

The Basilica of San Clemente

Basilica San Clemente

One of my favourite monuments in Rome, the Basilica of San Clemente was once a private home used for Christian worship in the 1st century AD before becoming a proper church in the 6th century and finally evolving into the present basilica at the turn of the 12th century.

Start at the main level and make your way to the subterranean pagan temple of Mithras for a journey back in time to the ancient city of Rome.

The San Clemente Basilica is in Piazza San Clemente, tucked behind the colosseum, via Via Di San Giovanni in Laterano.

Scavi Tour under St. Peter’s Basilica

Before the massive and imposing Basilica of St. Peter was built, a smaller church was commissioned by Emporer Constantine in 333 AD. A tour takes you 12 metres below the basilica, where you can see the ruins of the ancient church and the most sacred area in the whole of the Vatican, where St. Peter was buried. This tour must be booked directly through the Vatican at the following link.

Catacombs

The Catacombs of Rome are almost all located along the Via Appia Antica, or the Appian Way. This historic road is believed to be where Christ appeared to Peter as he fled Rome in the days of the Christian persecutions. Reach the Appia Antica catacombs by Metro line A to the “San Giovanni” stop and from there, take bus 218 outbound to the Via Appia Antica.

Capuchin Crypt – the “Bone Church”

Borghese Gallery

Commonly referred to as the “Bone Church”, the lower level of the Santa Maria della Concezione church in Piazza Barberini houses an interesting collection of bones. Capuchin monks took the bones of their dearly departed friars and used them to decorate six rooms that branch off from a single hallway. A video tour of the crypt can be seen here.

Borghese Gallery Museum

No matter what your appreciation for art, the collection of sculptures by Baroque Master Gian Lorenzo Bernini deserves your time and your 8 Euros. You’ll also find paintings by Raphael, Titian, and Caravaggio to name only a few. The Borghese Gallery is located at Piazzale Scipione Borghese, 5.

A cheap weekend in Athens is not as difficult as you might imagine. Here’s all you need to know:

The Acropolis

Getting to Athens

– you can hop on a relatively cheap flight from almost anywhere in Europe. Sample return weekend fares (leaving on a Saturday morning and returning on a Monday morning) to London average around £115 – 140, depending on the time of year. Off season may be cheaper. After landing in Athens, you will need to take the Metro or a bus from the airport into downtown. Each takes about an hour and I much prefer the Metro. One-way fares are about €6 for the Metro and €3,60 for the bus.

Getting around Athens

– once in downtown Athens I would say the BEST way for a non-Greek speaking person to get around is the Metro. It is new and clean,as a result of the Olympics, and is very efficient. Since most signs in Athens are in the Cyrillic alphabet, the Metro announces stops with enough advance notice so that you don’t have to scramble to get off. The stations themselves also offer a glimpse of ancient Greece because any relics that were found while digging out the subway are now displayed inside many of the Metro stations.

Visiting the Ruins in Athens

Ancient Greece

– to go to Athens and not make the ancient sites part of your visit would be like going to Rome and not visiting the Colosseum. I recommend the Acropolis and the National Archaeology Museum. Museum admission costs about €6 or €12 with a combo ticket to the Acropolis. Each site is good for a half-day visit.

Shopping and Eating in Athens

– visitors will find plenty to shop for, especially Greek and Byzantine styled jewellery, but shop around and be willing to barter. Prices vary widely and dealers often offer discounts to friendly travellers. Some stops might include the Monastiraki Flea Market on Sundays, where you can find anything from genuine antiques to genuine junk. The crowds alone make it a colourful experience. Visitors should also explore the area known as the Plaka. Most of the streets in the Plaka are closed to cars, so pedestrians and tourists can feel free to explore without being run over…unless it’s by an errant scooter!

Athens Wanderlust

There is so much more to be said about a cheap weekend to Athens but some things you have to discover on your own – that’s part of the adventure.

As they say in Athens, “Kali tihi!”

The Polish city of Krakow has plenty of things to see and do. A weekend here lets you soak up history, appreciate beauty and drink the best hot chocolate in the world.

Things to Do in Krakow

Rynek Głowny – Krakow’s Central Square

Central Krakow

As Europe’s largest medieval square, Rynek Głowny is an atmospheric place to start your trip and get your bearings. Try Obwarzanki, a doughy pretzel snack sold across Krakow, and make sure you track down the Wedel shop on the north of the square. It has the air of an aristocratic teahouse but serves the best hot chocolate, with the strongest flavour.

The Cloth Market

Krakow’s Cloth Market has been trading throughout the city’s tumultuous history for over 600 years. Today, the covered hall specialises in jewellery, wooden crafts and souvenirs.

Wawel Castle

Perched on a hilltop and complete with its legend about a virgin-eating dragon, Wawel castle has a large collection of furniture, portraits and tapestries.

Jagiellonian University

Krakow's University District

A stroll through the park that surrounds the University is a nice way to get a feel for Krakow’s centuries of study and learning. Former students include Copernicus, the first man to suggest that the Earth revolves around the sun.

Kazimierz

Kazimierz was the home of a thriving Jewish community until World War II, when the Nazis drove Jews from their homes. Today it’s undergoing something of a renaissance, with cafés, music and bars. Visit the modern Galicia Jewish Museum to understand more about its terrible past.

Podgórze

Across the Wisła river, this district was the site of the Jewish ghetto featured in Schindler’s List. Schindler’s factory remains, as do fragments of the ghetto walls. The small Museum of National Remembrance gives a sobering and poignant portrait of the atrocities committed here.

Concerts

Krakow at Night

Several concerts take place within walking distance of Rynek Głowny, including classical Chopin, traditional Jewish music and Polish folk music in costume. Find up to date listings from any one of the tourist offices in the streets north of Rynek Głowny.

Day Trips

Krakow has plenty of posters for the Wieliczka Salt Mines and the Auschwitz death camps.

I would recommend visiting both, but it is difficult to fit them into a weekend trip.

A return visit to the Salt Mines takes between four and five hours, while a visit to Auschwitz & Birkenau takes around six hours. Auschwitz can be a disturbing, distressing experience and it’s not wise to tack it onto a trip without thinking. To read more about my feelings on the subject, read A Cold and Lonely Path: Into Auschwitz.

Getting Around

Krakow Cloth Hall

With spirit and enthusiasm, you can walk between everything mentioned here (except for the out of town excursions.) If weariness sets in, use one of the many trams that shuttle around the city.

Buy tickets from the machines next to the tram stops . Tickets are cheap (around 2 – 3 zloty) and need to be time-stamped when you board the tram (watch the locals for how to do this.) Tram maps are (fairly) easy to decipher and are printed on the main tram stops.

Wedel Chocolate, Krakow

Watch out when getting off a tram, however. Many don’t have platforms and thrust you straight out onto the road…

There are plenty of things to do in Krakow – Enjoy!

For a relaxing weekend break away, with some of the best art, culture and architecture in Europe, Cecil Lee recommends Florence in Italy’s Tuscany...

Florence - by jonrawlinson

For a relaxing weekend break away, with some of the best art, culture and architecture in Europe, Cecil Lee recommends Florence in Italy’s Tuscany.

“Planning your weekend trip to Florence is much easier and cheaper than ever before,” he says.

Here are his suggestions:

Sightseeing Highlights in Florence

1) In the morning, climb the stairs in Duomo, the most famous cathedral in Florence. It’ll give you the best view of the city, although you’ll have to climb 460 spiral steps first.

2) Then visit the Accademia Gallery. Spend a few hours relaxing and seeking out David, the world famous sculpture from my favourite sculptor, Michelangelo.

Florence's Duomo, by Alaskandude

3) Walk along the Arno, Florence’s main river, to reach the Vecchio Bridge, where shops sell jewellery, art and souvenirs. The view is marvellous, especially in the evening just before the sun sets.

4) Catch a panoramic view of Florence from Piazzale Michelangelo, south of the old town, where it’s worth setting up your camera and tripod.

5) It’s easy to find a wonderful Italian dinner and gelato dessert throughout the town and for some late night excitement, visit the Irish Pubs or Bebop for a pint or two.

Ponte Vecchio - by rayced

6) Next morning, wake up early and stroll through the impressive San Lorenzo market, with its high quality local leather shoes, wallets, bags and so on.

The author: Cecil Lee is an avid traveller and passionate travel blogger and photographer living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He writes about travel for MNUI travel insurance and on his own travel photo blog, Travel Feeder.
