Travelling in Europe? Do You Have One of These?
An EHIC Card.
The name’s not particularly catchy or exciting but there you go. Health care, as usual, falls under the “Boring But Important” category.
The good news for European citizens is that you’re entitled to free, emergency health care across the European Union – but ONLY if you have a valid EHIC card with you. Older, ahem, travellers should know that the EHIC card replaces the E111.
This also applies to European Citizens needing emergency health care in the UK.
EHIC Cards are free and you can apply for them by phone, in person at the Post Office or online here.
However, an EHIC card doesn’t entitle you to repatriation, accommodation for relatives, flight refunds or a whole host of other boring-but-important things so make sure you look into getting thorough travel insurance as well.
So there you are. Travelling within Europe? Take ten minutes out of your day to check that you have a valid EHIC Card.

Oooh, I’ve never heard of this. I wonder if it is valid for someone like me who doesn’t have Italian citizenship yet, but has an Italian health card?
Good question…I know that in the UK the application for an EHIC is really quick and painless. Is it worth trying to find out?
